Drive Electric Colorado presents an EVs in Colorado report. Using data from the Colorado Energy Office’s EV Dashboard and the Alternative Fueling Station Locator from the Department of Energy, Drive Electric Colorado provides the most current and accurate sales data for EVs and charging data by county, make/model, and electric vehicle type.

As of February 1, 2021, there were 33,653 EVs on the road in Colorado, up from 31,771 EVs since December 1, 2020. Of this total, 23,351 were battery electric vehicles (BEV) and 10,302 were plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).  

Key points from the most current data since February 1, 2021:

  • Electric car sales were up 5.92% (+1,882 EVs) from December 1, 2020.  
  • Top selling electric car makes:
    • Tesla
    • Nissan
    • Chevrolet
    • BMW
    • Ford

There are currently 3,862 total charging ports available in Colorado. Within this total, 3,328 of these are Level 2 chargers, and 518 of these Level 3/DC fast chargers. ChargePoint Network owns most of these Level 2 ports (1,908) and Tesla owns the most DC fast charger ports (197). From quarter 2 of 2020 (April 1 – June 3), there was an average of 518 active charging stations, with 53,213 hours of charging over 26,963 charging sessions. 

Breaking it down by county and vehicle model, here are the top models and top counties where they are sold:

Boulder County

  • 5,737 electric vehicles (4,313 BEVs and 1,424 PHEVs)
  • 70 EV models
  • Highest number of Nissans: 1,761
  • Highest number of Toyotas: 257
  • Highest number of Fiat-Chryslers: 172
  • Highest number of Kias: 82

Denver County

  • 5,344 electric vehicles (3,694 BEVs and 1,650 PHEVs)
  • 66 EV models
  • Highest number of Teslas: 2,391
  • Highest number of BMWs: 310
  • Highest number of Fords: 192
  • Highest number of Volvos: 171
  • Highest number of Audis: 148

Jefferson County

  • 4,312 electric vehicles (3,018 BEVs and 1,294 PHEVs)
  • 68 EV models 
  • Highest number of Chevys: 627

Arapahoe County

  • 3,739 electric vehicles (2,671 BEVs and 1,068 PHEVs) 
  • 65 EV models
